What is meant by “reviling”?

1 Peter 3:9 (ESV)

9 Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing.

The term refers to insults, verbal abuse. Fallen human nature is quick to return a greater insult than the one received. For the Greeks of Peter’s day knowing how to bear the insults you received and how to insult another was one of the finer arts of life.
