In what way were the apostles dishonoured?

Acts 5:41 (ESV)

41 Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name.

The flogging which the apostles received was meant to shame the apostles and mark them out as criminals or lawbreakers.1 It was hoped that this would act as a deterrent to stop their preaching or at the very least persuade others not to heed them.2
