Colossians 1:1 (ESV)

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,

The truth that Paul did not make himself an apostle serves as a sobering reminder to so many who claim to be pastors by self-proclamation. For Paul, the call was God’s will. It is God’s will revealed to Paul and it was revealed to God’s church through Ananias as God also communicated this to him. Paul can write this phrase because he knows that the churches can attest to this. It was something than can be tested to be true. It is still the same today that God works through his church in calling ministers; the internal call or personal call must be affirmed by God’s church.
