Why was the demoniac always crying and cutting himself with stones?

Mark 5:5 (ESV)

5 Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones.

His soul was tormented night and day. Perhaps physical pain would distract him from his spiritual pain and thereby provide him with temporary relief.
