The angel of the Lord is often mentioned in Scripture (see also Genesis 16:7; Joshua 5:14–15; Judges 2:1–3) and appears to refer to the messenger or representative of the Lord on earth, and also refers to the Lord himself. Traditional interpretation has held that this angel refers to a manifestation of Christ before his birth.
