What does it mean for sins to be blotted out?

Acts 3:19 (ESV)

19 Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out,

This phrase draws on the idea of wiping clean or washing papyri to remove letters written in ink so that one can write on the surface once again.1 It is used again in Colossians 2:14 and Revelation 21:4. The sins of those who turn to God will be removed so as to leave no trace.
