Why does Peter tell the lame man to look at him and John?

Acts 3:4 (ESV)

4 And Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.”

As with modern beggars, the man probably keeps his eyes down with either his hands or some kind of jar available for people to give him money. Asking people for money brings shame. It is not easy. In telling the beggar to look at them, Peter wants to engage him and speak to him.
