Why are there two men in white robes with the disciples?

Acts 1:10 (ESV)

10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes,

The two men dressed in white are angels. Their presence is necessary for divine encouragement and to highlight the supernatural character of what has just been seen.1 The presence of two angels most likely corresponds with the biblical patterns of requiring two witnesses (Deuteronomy 19:15).
