In addition to the partygoers
(Joel 1:5), Joel now addresses his fellow farmers and vine-growers. There is nothing left in terms of primary daily necessities and everything that makes pleasant and wholesome. Not only has everything been eaten bare, but the land is also suffering from dehydration. The circumstances get so bad that no one is happy anymore. People stare gloomily ahead. There is no more hope, and no food or drink for today. Neither is there anything for tomorrow. Starvation stares them in the face. The repeated description of the catastrophe indicates how comprehensive it was and how it all affected Joel.
11 Be ashamed, O tillers of the soil; wail, O vinedressers, for the wheat and the barley, because the harvest of the field has perished.
