How was Rahab's house part of the city wall?

Joshua 2:15 (ESV)

15 Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was built into the city wall, so that she lived in the wall.

Archaeology from the time of Jericho shows that it was a common practice for the houses of a city to be built in such a way that the back wall of the house also formed the outside of the city wall.1 Rahab had one of these homes. This enabled her to let the men down from a high top window by means of a rope.
