Why should kindness result in kindness?

Joshua 2:12 (ESV)

12 Now then, please swear to me by the LORD that, as I have dealt kindly with you, you also will deal kindly with my father’s house, and give me a sure sign

Kindness typically refers to acts of loyalty such as faithfully carrying out the pledge of an agreement. Rahab’s protection of the spies is an act of loyalty that deserves a reciprocal response.1 In ancient Near Eastern cultures, reciprocation was very important. If someone did you a favour, you would be almost obligated to do the same for them.
