Who was the king of Jericho?

Joshua 2:2 (ESV)

2 And it was told to the king of Jericho, “Behold, men of Israel have come here tonight to search out the land.”

The king of Jericho was the leader of the city. He was responsible for ensuring the security of Jericho and the surround regions.1 Towns in Palestine at the time were equivalent to independent city-states, with their rulers being known as kings.2
