How would a person come to realize their guilt?

Leviticus 5:5 (ESV)

5 when he realizes his guilt in any of these and confesses the sin he has committed,

As mentioned before (see commentary on Leviticus 4:13), guilt is not something which is pronounced (in a judicial sense) upon an individual, but realized (in a subjective sense) through various means.
