1 After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, the LORD said to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant,

Joshua can be divided into three main sections with the final verses serving as an epilogue:

  1. Israel takes possessions of the land (Joshua 1:1 – 12:24)

    • Preparation for war (Joshua 1:1 – 5:15)

    • War (Joshua 6:1 – 12:24)

  2. Land is allotted to the various tribes with cities for the Levites and as places of refuge (Joshua 13:1 – 21:45)

    • Land still to be possessed (Joshua 13:1–7)

    • Distribution of land to the tribes (Joshua 13:8 – 19:51)

    • Cities of refuge and Levitical towns (Joshua 20:1 – 21:45)

  3. A potential crisis and time of covenant renewal (Joshua 22:1 – 24:28)

    • Dealing with potential covenant violations (Joshua 22:1–34)

    • Covenant exhortations and renewal (Joshua 23:1 – 24:28)
